Who runs Makeup by Emma and how did you start out in business?

Makeup by Emma is run by me, Emma an experienced makeup artist. I’ve been in the beauty industry for quite some time; however, it wasn’t until after my own wedding several years ago that I realised I should merge my two passions of makeup and weddings together. I love the magic and atmosphere around weddings – there is nothing nicer than an excited bride and her tribe, and it really is always an honour to be apart of someone else’s special day.

For my own wedding, the makeup artist used airbrush makeup which I thought was INCREDIBLE! I fell in love with it instantly, wowed by how I stayed looking flawless all day! It was quite a few years after, and after my first born that I decided that this was something I wanted to train in, and as they say the rest is history! Here I am today, successfully running Makeup by Emma, offering high quality bridal makeup to Brides across Wiltshire, Somerset, Bath and Bristol.

What is your greatest fear when you are working on a wedding?

This seems to be a very popular question as I’m asked it regularly, especially by the bridesmaids! I think I’d have to say that it is the thought of dropping makeup down the bride when applying the finishing touch ups, when she has her dress on. I always get nervous walking towards her with a pallet and lip brush in hand! Thankfully it has never happened, and fingers crossed it never will!

What is your greatest extravagance that helps you get through the day?

I wouldn't say I have any real extravagances; however, I cannot go a day without chocolate - it really does get me through the day!

What is the best theme you have seen at a wedding?

I have two very different stand out ones which have been my favourite to date... The first was an Ibiza clubbing theme, and the other for a VERY different reason was a west country farmers theme. They couldn’t have been more difference, but I loved them both equally.

What is the hardest thing a couple has ever asked you to do for their day?

I think I have been very lucky; I haven't encountered any difficulties with any brides, or grooms for that matter. I always try my best to accommodate any wishes or requests that are asked of me and so far, nothing has been too much of an ask or too much trouble. I think I’m lucky that in my role within the wedding of a couple, there aren’t too many requests that can be seen as ‘hard’ and I can always (to date!) provide the service they want with relative ease.

When was the last time you laughed out loud at a wedding? What happened?

Earlier this year I had a booking to provide makeup for three ladies which were guests at a wedding, and they totally blew me away! The whole morning, they didn't stop taking the mick out of each other and telling embarrassing stories of what happened to them over the years. I have never heard stories like it, and to top it off they were all on the vodka before they arrived to me at 9am for their makeup! I think I laughed the entire morning; it was such fun and a real pleasure to make them wedding ready!

What moment are you most proud of in your profession?

My standout moment has to be taking the plunge and going solo and setting up my business. It can be incredibly daunting and scary, but I did it and I am so proud that I did because several years on I have a fabulous business that I am proud to be the face of.

I also always get that proud feeling once I am finished with a bride and they go on their way to walk down the aisle. I absolutely love it when that first picture lands in my inbox from the couple or their photographer, and I see how amazingly happy she looked on her wedding day, knowing I was a part of that is rather special and always makes me smile.

Where is your favourite setting for a wedding?

Oooh... this is a hard question as I have seen so many and I have quite a few favourites at the moment! However, one thing they all have in common is an amazing outdoor space or garden. This makes a stunning back drop for any photo no matter the weather, so this has got to be my favourite element to a setting for sure!

What is the one thing you can’t live without in your job?

My kit is my everything - I wouldn't be able to do my job without it! And a sneaky bar of chocolate too (of course!)

What question do you wish every Bride would ask you when you are meeting with them for the first time?

One question that a Bride should always ask their makeup artist is ‘what are you going to do for me on the day?’

The answer for me is so easy - I'm not just your makeup artist on your wedding day, I am everything you need me to be. Of course, my priority is to make you look perfect for your big day, but after that I am whatever you need me to be. Whether that is doing up the buttons on your dress as your bridesmaids can’t (usually because they have nails on their not used to!!!) or, talking to the father of the bride and assuring him that even though his little girl is getting married there will always be a place for him. I’ve been asked or more often that not I’ve offered to do an array of tasks. What’s important to me is your day is everything you’ve dreamt of and more, so I will go beyond the tasks of a makeup artist to see that this is always the case.

There is one question I always like to ask my bride’s so it’s great when they come to be ready with the answer! ‘What time does your photographer want you ready by?’

All photographers like to take pictures of the bride before she walks down the aisle, even if they aren’t capturing their bridal prep. If the bride knows the answer to this question, I am then able to plan all my timings for prep, bridal party, bride and any last-minute extras.

Where do you draw inspiration from for your work?

For me each bride is different and unique in the look they would like to achieve so I listen to what they would like their end goal to be and go from there. I do love period makeup though and I especially love the 40's & 50's so where possible I draw inspiration from these eras.
