Lennox of Misters Discos is a professional wedding DJ who offers a beautifully rustic set-up which would fit in perfectly for wedding receptions at Barns, Farms, Tipi's and Country Manor Houses.  Misters Discos rustic range is bespoke, mixing professional sound and lighting with rustic apple crate visuals. Lennox aims to complement your beautiful rustic styled wedding, allowing you to have a one of a kind disco display.

Let's hear what Lennox had to say when we quizzed him about how he got started as a DJ and why having Misters Discos at your wedding would give you a night to remember.

Who’s the owner behind Misters Discos, and tell us about you and your service

I've been a DJ for over 20 years now and I've had a real love for music for as long as I can remember, both my parents are Jamaican so naturally music is in the blood.

My dad used to build sound systems in the 70's and 80's, so I was around loud music from a young age!

Misters Discos offers quality disco services at an affordable price, we specialise in rustic set-ups, we decided to expand this side of the business for two reasons; firstly to fit in with the types of venues we typically get asked to play at, such as Barn, Farms and Country Manor Houses and secondly, because we wanted to try and separate ourselves from other DJ companies.

We showcased our apple crate set-up at The Great Western Wedding Show at the STEAM Museum in Swindon in January 2020 which was phenomenal for us. It really took the business to another level.

How would you define your DJ style? Who does it typically appeal to?

I would define my DJing style as fun but professional. I'm from a generation when music was superb, I love 50's 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, the majority of my customer base shares a similar taste in music; even the kids, it always makes me smile when I see an 18-year-old singing ''Never gonna give you up'' by Rick Astley.

Although a lot of today's music may not be my cup of tea, I totally understand I'm there to provide a service and will always do a cracking job. I try to entertain as well as keeping the dance floor packed, it's all very well just playing music, this can only get you so far, I try and interact with people whether it be on the microphone or accepting that dance from one of the guests. If I feel a musical genre is better suited to someone else, I assign that booking to another one of our DJ's, regardless of the musical preference we have it covered and rest assured the client will get the best possible service.

Why hire a DJ rather than having a playlist linked to some speakers?

I would always recommend having a DJ, plugging in an iPhone is just not the same.

DJ's offer so much more, a good DJ is versatile, and has the ability to adapt to the atmosphere, the venue and the music taste of the guests. A really good DJ will turn your wedding celebration into the biggest dance floor with well-known tunes, and even party games. Besides this, we make announcements, coordinate, and organise your wedding with you. We keep track of the timelines created and make sure that all the other suppliers are ready for each specific formality such as the first dance and so on.

We have a huge music library which allows us to create unique playlists from different era's specifically, countries, or mixture of genres. Furthermore, we offer our suggestions and thoughts when discussing your wedding playlist. We play songs that fit with your desired taste and often have exclusive mixes or versions.

One must also take into account, a DJ keeps the momentum going through the wedding reception. We know how to smoothly mix in one song to another without any gaps or silence or any uncomfortable rhythm transitions. A good DJ also understands their setting and know if they need to have a faster speed or a slower one. Furthermore, we take requests from the guests and play music that work with the feeling and style of your wedding, show me an iPod that can do all of that!

What’s the best bit about your job?

The best bit of my job funny enough is reading the reviews and thank you emails. It's nice when people say thank you at the end of the night, but they have usually had a few drinks, so you never know if it's genuine!

It's such a good feeling when couples take the time to get in touch after their wedding to say thank you, it means we've really done a good job. I would also have to say I love the fact that people choose us, it might sound funny but to be picked and be a part of a couples big day is awesome!

Its such a big responsibility when DJing at a wedding, because everyone has a story about a reception that wasn't that good due to the music or DJ.

When was the last time you laughed out loud with one of your couples? What happened?

The last time I laughed out loud with a couple was a few years back.  I was finishing up the night with a few slow songs, the Mother-in-Law asked for ''Time of my life'' Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes, now I usually try to avoid this song at the end because it always ends the same way.

People always try to recreate the famous lift which is not a good idea when lots of alcohol has been consumed anyway, the lady kept asking, so I played the song. Low and behold the saxophone solo came on and lift... The Mother-in-Law went running into the arms of some guest who was way too intoxicated to stand, let alone catch anyone.

They both ended up in a complete mess, I tried to remain professional and not laugh, but the bride caught me trying not to laugh and burst out laughing herself, I turned away, so the guest couldn't see me laughing, but she ran up to me pointing and she actually spun me around and was crying with laughter, my stomach was aching I was laughing so much, luckily nobody was hurt, we all saw the funny side of it. I ended the night with Michael Bublé '' Home'' the night was a roaring success!

What is your greatest fear when you are working at a wedding or event?

Any DJ will tell you their greatest fear is being late or their equipment failing.  Luckily enough the latter has only happened to me once, my laptop crashed for no reason which was devastating, I was so embarrassed.

The guest were so good about it, I rebooted everything and played the song again no harm done.  Unfortunately there is nothing you can do when Gremlins get into equipment but having BACK-UP EQUIPMENT IS A MUST which all of our DJ's do.

What is your favourite style of wedding?

I typically don't have a favourite style of wedding I've done so many different ones from a stately Manor House to a reception in somebody's back garden.  That's another part of my job I really enjoy, no two events are the same, the setting changes all the time, every occasion is magical.

I remember doing a disco in a couples back garden, it was quite a large garden the couple put up a marquee and really dressed everything beautifully. Instead of having caterers they hired a mobile fish and chip and ice cream van which went down a storm, it made the whole reception so much more relaxed and informal the music went down a storm. So it really doesn't matter about the venue, people make the event!

What bit of advice would you love to share with couples?

The best bit of advice I try to always give couples is, don't scrimp on the entertainment, we are as important as the flowers, cake, dress, and everything else.  You want your guest to leave on a high, people always talk about the wedding reception, whether it was good or bad.  You want you to go into the 'Hall of Fame'' of receptions that rocked! That come's at a price like everything else. You don't have to pay the earth just allow a decent budget, we won't let you down.

What moment are you most proud of in your profession?

My proudest moment in my profession is starting Mister Discos.  It's been a real journey for all involved but I wouldn't change a thing, being my own boss was always a lifetime goal.  The chance to plant a seed and watch it grow into a forest is an opportunity most people never get, I appreciate the challenge especially in times like these.

It's really nice to be a part of a special moment in peoples life, I try to enjoy it as mush as possible because I know I won't be doing it forever, I definitely don't want to be that DJ who stayed behind his decks to long ha ha ha!
