Real Wedding: Charlotte & Matt at Kingscote Barn

We loved the look of this cake from Hannah Culley's Cakes even when we spotted the flowers in Instagram! Here's what Hannah has to say about it...

"What a showstopper this was even if I do say so myself! When Charlotte and Matt contacted me back in October last year about their wedding cake and what they were looking for I knew if I could get it right it would look beautiful. A rustic, simple four tier cake with delicious flavours; salted caramel, lemon curd, red velvet and carrot covered in a thin layer of vanilla buttercream and draped with edible wild flowers flowing down on each layer. The cake was to be placed on a log stand in pride of place in the cove at Kingscote Barn.

It was a beautiful spring sunny day at the beginning of April; I set it up in the afternoon just before the wedding breakfast so it was as fresh as possible. With naked cakes they always have to be set up at just the right time to ensure longevity especially with flowers. I drove down the long winding driveway to the stunning barn where I caught a glimpse of the bride and groom and their guests talking and laughing away just after the ceremony. I crept round the back and into the venue where I was to place the cake and have it all ready for the beautiful bride and groom. Using edible flowers was different but so effective, Charlotte and Matt wanted flowers that weren’t too bright and shocking, pale pastels but also colours that would stand out so I used primroses, violas, pansies, violets and lavender all in pinks, purples, yellows and blues. I sourced these from fab suppliers Greens of Devon and Meadowsweet flowers. Charlotte had one specific request for the cake to have what we called it a ‘flower crown’ so I used Meadowsweet’s crystallised primroses and lavender to create the circular crown on the top tier, a perfect finish for the cake. I LOVED it!

It looked absolutely perfect in the barn which looked stunning, I loved setting it up, I saw the bride and groom glance through the window taking a peak and little children pointing to their parents with smiles! I had the most amazing comment from Charlotte on Instagram when I posted it and received a thank you card last week with the kindest and most fantastic words… on Instagram Charlotte wrote “This cake was absolutely INCREDIBLE, it did taste as good as it looked and was perfection for our day, thank you SO much!”. I was so, so happy and this cake is now up there as one of my favourites I’ve made to date. Thank you to Matt and Charlotte for choosing me to create this beauty for your wedding day."
